Coffee Makes Everything Better by Guest Blogger @frankenbabyx3

Mental illness comes with a nasty stigma attached. It sucks, it’s awful, wrong, and ignorant.

  1. lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated.
“he was told constantly that he was ignorant and stupid”

People fear, what they do not know, or understand. While some people, are just downright rude. Being judged because your brain isn’t wired correctly, is fucking wrong. Being judged because you had to go through something that caused a lot of damage/trauma. Is fucking wrong. And it hurts when people do these things. I know. Been there, done that. Lived through it. I encourage you, to see beyond the ignorance. Do not hate them, educate them.

No one, ever will fully understand what you’re going through, but there are people who can help you. There are people out there that have been through something similar: reach out to them. Let them help you. Find people who also have similar problems: reach out to them. I have, I have a group of people that at any time I’m in need, I can reach out to them for help, and they can reach out to me. I encourage you to do the same. It makes a whole world of difference.

Also, coffee makes everything better. And books. Find yourself a great bookstore, library or book/s online about your illness. Educate yourself, so you can understand. So you, can educate others on the illness. Don’t let your mental illness/disease/defect ruin you. Don’t let it become you. You are strong, and independent. Fight it. Find what works for you: group therapy, one-on-one sessions, medications, etc. However there is one thing, that I’ve done that I do not encourage anyone ever to do: there are serious dangers and consequences for letting mental illnesses go untreated.

There are many, many ways to deal with/cope with an illness. I hope, that you will find plenty of positive ways to cope.

People can be really fucking ignorant, even people you never expected to act in such a wretched manner. It’s gonna suck. A lot. It’s gonna hurt, more than I’m able to put into words. I cannot describe the way it feels when someone you love and trust betrays you and is cold, and bullies, discriminates against, judges you or just says something that you find extremely offensive regarding your illness. But I promise you, it’s not the end of the world. People like that, they don’t deserve to be in your life if they will not be supportive and helpful. There are many people who can and will help and be supportive.

Finally, I encourage you to write to Stigma Fighters. Tell your story. Let it out. It’s not everyone’s type of thing, but I found it to be very therapeutic. Plus, having friends like Sarah Fader and Allie Burke in your life is really fucking awesome.

Love all you awesome people,
Christin <3
